He plays the part of a seedy copper, who is a racist and misogynist, so it’s no surprise Scottish star James McAvoy described the role of Bruce Robertson in his latest film Filth as “probably the biggest risk of my career”.
But when he spoke to STV’s Grant Lauchlan, the star revealed that he wouldn’t have turned the part down for anything.
“I think I said that offhand in one interview and it’s become the thing I always say,” the actor said. [But]“It’s as much of a risk as anything is a risk because you never know if anything is going to be good or not. But this is probably the best script I’ve ready in the last two or three years.
“And why wouldn’t it be? It’s from the mind of Irvine Welsh, as seen through Jon Baird, and Irvine Welsh’s voice is so unique, so important culturally I think – not just in Scotland, but there’s no one like him in the world. It’s no wonder it’s such a strong script.”
He added: “For those reasons I don’t think it’s that big a risk…and if I’m rotten in it nobody’s going to say I can’t work again – or maybe if I’m that bad I’ll never work again!”
Adapted from the Irvine Welsh book of the same name, the movie tells the story of a policeman who manipulates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure promotion and win back his wife and daughter.
Describing the movie as “dark” as well as “strange, interesting and funny”, the actor explained a little more about the character of Bruce Robertson.
“He’s not somebody you want to be, he’s not somebody you’d want to know… if you see somebody manipulate and corrupt and abuse and all these things then ultimately you want to see them get their comeuppance, and without giving too much away you probably get that in this as well.”
Several of the scenes for the film have been shot in Scotland, and it’s something McAvoy would like to see happening a lot more in the country – particularly with British movies.
Speaking about the recent boom of movies being shot in the country – such as Brad Pitt movie World War Z – James said: “The big movies have been coming in from America and using Scottish locations.
“And that’s fantastic but I think it’s always important to harness our own artistic output to create stuff made here, for here, by us, as well, and that’s what this is, and that’s the other side.
”Everybody’s been talking about World War Z coming here and taking over George Square; and I don’t get me wrong that’s amazing and long may Hollywood money pour into Glasgow, but we also need to do stuff for us by us for us.”
After Filth, McAvoy says he plans to take a holiday, but also hinted that working on a future X Men movie might be in the pipeline too.
He told Grant: “We were very pleased with it [the last X Men movie], it got received very well and we were surprised in a nice way just how well it went down, because those kinds of films don’t usually go down that well.
”The desire from us and the studio is there to make another one, it’s just about coming up with a good enough story to warrant it.”

JAMES McAvoy has admitted his new role in Irvine Welsh’s Filth could spell the end of his A-List career in Hollywood.
James, 32, has built a stellar CV in America thanks to films, such as X Men: First Class and Wanted.
But next month he is heading home to Scotland to star in the film adaptation of the controversial book.
In the film he plays Bruce Robertson, an Edinburgh police officer with a depraved and debauched lifestyle.
Robertson is a nasty piece of work – a bigot and a racist who sleeps with the wives of his brother and best friend.
He enjoys cross-dressing and extreme sex, like bestiality and autoerotic asphyxiation.
Starring in Welsh’s Trainspotting didn’t harm Ewan McGregor and Kelly Macdonald but they were little known when they played junkie Renton and his schoolgirl lover. James fears that, as an established actor, taking on this part could be a disastrous mistake.
But it’s a risk he is willing to take.
James said: “I’m taking probably the biggest risk of my career in playing the part in Filth.
“It’s an incredible role for me, unlike anything I’ve ever done and a massive challenge. One I hope I don’t dash myself on.”
The film, which starts shooting in Glasgow next month, also stars Jamie Bell as James’s sidekick and Alan Cumming as his boss.
And it continues the influx of Hollywood stars to Scotland over the last few months.
This year, we have had Brad Pitt filming his zombie movie World War Z, Halle Berry in Cloud Atlas and beauty Scarlett Johansson was in Scotland shooting scenes for Under The Skin.
Despite the seedy nature of the film, James reckons it’s important he takes risks in his career or he will be sucked into starring in movies that are easy and uncontroversial.
And he knows that would quickly lead to him becoming bored with his profession and with audiences also feeling the same. He said: “If you stop taking risks, then you get bored, or you just keep playing the same part, over and over again.
“Eventually audiences get bored of that as well. “
The pressure is on now that he is well-known. He said: “It is difficult because everyone is watching now.

While promoting The Adventures of Tintin , James’ co star Jamie Bell talked a bit about Filth which begins filming in January.
M&C: Tell me about Filth. Sounds interesting.
Bell: It’s based on an Irving Welsh book; he wrote Trainspotting. It’s not a similar vein but it’s a similar world, of corruption and deviancy and it’s something very different from Tintin. It’s me and James McAvoy and Alan Cummings and we play corrupt Edinburgh policemen.
There is a promotion at the station we’re vying for and there’s lots of competition. This is a character for James that we don’t know. It’s a totally different side to this character. He’s very talented.
M&C: Chalk to cheese.
Bell: That’s it. You have to change it up!

Updating regarding James’ upcoming movie, Filth from Jamie Bell:
Jamie Bell has said he can’t wait to start work on Filth.
The Tintin star is set to play Ray Lennox alongside James McAvoy as lead character Bruce Robertson and Alan Cumming as his boss Toal in Jon S Baird’s big-screen adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s controversial novel.
“That’s going to be great. James McAvoy is playing a great character in that. Hopefully we will be starting that at the beginning of next year,” he said.
Jamie is a huge fan of Irvine, who will be producing Filth: “I read it and love the book. I love all of Irvine’s work. I consider him such an interesting character and he always puts so much substance into all of his books.”
It’s an edgy change of direction for the 25-year-old Scottish actor, who recently appeared in period piece Jane Eyre, action epic The Eagle and sci-fi adventure Jumper.
“I don’t like to be pigeon-holed, I don’t want to categorise myself as one particular actor,” he continued.
“It’s always great for an actor to show range. You always want to do something different and I’m very lucky that I have had those kinds of opportunities to do that kind of stuff. It’s really exciting.”
Jamie added: “The choices I make are always driven by the filmmaker, who has the beginning and final say on what the movie is going to be. They are the visionary in front.”

Filth is looking for distributors at Toronto International Film Festival. James is still attached to the film.
“No one wants Toronto to become a huge market, but it’s a great place to do all kinds of business. Everyone that’s drawn to Toronto loves movies, which is what makes it so vibrant,” said Sierra’s Nick Meyer, who will be plugging the James McAvoy dark comedy-drama Filth, directed and written by Jon S. Baird, to foreign buyers, among other projects.
Sierra/Affinity topper Nick Meyer, who is shopping “Rampart” and screening footage of Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling starrer “The Place Beyond the Pines” — in addition to pre-shopping James McAvoy starrer “Filth” — said that because every movie has its own pedigree and structure, trying to find a trend in buying patterns during the recent economical swing is moot.

Update that James is indeed cast in Filth:
Today we spoke with the author about a film version of another one of his books, “Ecstasy” (more on that in a moment), and during our conversation he confirmed that not only is McAvoy on board for “Filth,” but that he’ll be joined by Jamie Bell and Alan Cumming, with filming to kick off in January 2012. “That’s going to be the main cast,” he told us adding, “James is going to be main character, Jamie is going to be Lennox his kind of sidekick and Alan is going to be Toal, his boss.”
Welsh is on board as a producer, with Brit helmer and friend Jon S. Baird behind the camera, who had impressed the author with his debut feature film. “Jon did a biopic of Cass Pennant, a film called ‘Cass,’ which was well received in the U.K…It was compared favourably by some of the critics to ‘This Is England.’ It was the same kind of style and really kind of a beautiful little film,” Welsh explained about how Baird came on board.
“Jon and I hit it off and became good friends. He’s worked really, really hard on it. I’ve been trying to that made with different producers and [with] different directors attached and different cast attached for years and years. He did a revised screenplay which was absolutely brilliant,” Welsh elaborated on the film’s development. “I think Jon’s definitely done something really sort of magic. He’s captured and he’s kept the essence of the main protagonist but he’s done a lot of interesting things with it as well. He’s kind of rendered very, very cinematic and I think it’s a great script and it’s going to make a great film with that cast attached.”
It’s hard to argue with that. Our big question is how the monologue by the protagonist’s tapeworm (yes, no joke) will be handled and if the film will stick with the wickedly black-as-night ending to the novel. Either way, McAvoy was not kidding around when he alluded to the project, and it’s certainly not like anything he’s done before. More to come next week including our exclusive trailer premiere for “Ecstasy,” with more from Welsh and the film’s director, Rob Heydon.
