Spielberg on Lincoln’s ticket

Posted by Jasmine with No Comments

You may find this interesting :) It’s comparing the storylines between Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln film and Conspirator which James is suppose to be in.

Steven Spielberg has made it very clear — he’s not giving up on Lincoln.

For several years, Spielberg has been trying to launch his Lincoln opus, but his project was postponed recently by budget and location problems.

Now, Robert Redford has moved into the picture, announcing his own Lincoln project, “The Conspirator,” which will start shooting next month with independent financing and a cast headed by James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn (Daily Variety, Sept. 14).

Spielberg tells me, “We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible.”

Spielberg is presently focusing on his “reimagining” of “Harvey,” with Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit.

Meanwhile, Redford’s film will mark his first directing gig since the disastrous “Lions for Lambs,” which helped sink United Artists’ comeback in 2007. The project will mark Redford’s return to a political topic — this one’s historical, to be sure.

Redford’s movie focuses on a young woman charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln. It’s being funded by a company headed by Joe Ricketts, who professes to be a history buff.

Spielberg’s Lincoln yarn reportedly was to focus on the president’s anguish over the length and toll of the Civil War. The script is being revised by Tony Kushner.

While Spielberg’s project will be a DreamWorks production, Redford, long a champion of indie filmmaking, seems bent on remaining outside the studio system. United Artists, which distributed his last film, has gone silent lately.

McAvoy & Penn set for ‘Conspirator’

Posted by Jasmine with No Comments

James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn are set to star in the Robert Redford-directed “The Conspirator,” the period drama based on true events following the assassination of President Lincoln.

Pic, for which an October start date has been set, marks the first financed by the American Film Co., which is headed by online brokerage entrepreneur Joe Ricketts.

Redford will produce with Wildwood Enterprises’ Greg Shapiro and Bill Holderman and American Film Co. execs Robert Stone, Webster Stone and Brian Falk.

James Solomon penned the script. Redford last directed “Lions for Lambs.”

Wright Penn will play Mary Surratt, the only woman among a group charged with conspiring to kill the president. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt and in the process comes to believe she is innocent.

Ricketts formed the American Film Co. to tell historically accurate American stories. As advisers on the pic the company has engaged Pulitzer Prize winner James McPherson and Lincoln assassination experts Thomas Turner and U.S. Army regimental historian Col. Fred Borch.

“Stories from our history are often more compelling than fiction,” Ricketts said. “Mary Surratt’s trial is a powerful, relevant story.”

McAvoy has been rumored to be reprising his role in “Wanted 2″ with director Timur Bekmambetov and possibly Angelina Jolie. “Wanted 2″ is also likely to shoot in 2010. Wright Penn most recently starred in the Rebecca Miller-directed “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.”

She is repped by CAA.

Elijah Wood Picks Bilbo for The Hobbit

Posted by Jasmine with 2 Comments

“That’s a tough one. I think Ian Holm really set a high bar for that performance. He really did an extraordinary job, and he really made it his own. There’s a lot of quirkiness to that character. It’s not the easiest character to play. One couldn’t really do it straightforward — there’s some odd quirks to him. So it’ll be interesting to see who they get. Nobody really comes to mind. They’ve mentioned a few people so far. James McAvoy is great. I think he could be interesting.
